The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) offers alerts about equine diseases that have been confirmed by reliable sources. The following information is from the EDCC.
Equine Herpesvirus, Ruidoso Downs Racetrack, New Mexico
New Mexico on June 18 has a new confirmed EHM case at Ruidoso Downs. The horse became neurological yesterday and was euthanized and the barn where the horse was located is under quarantine for exposure. No other horses are showing any signs, but strict biosecurity is in force. Temperatures will be taken on all horses on the racetrack, but at this stage the racetrack will remain open and running. Movement of horses is being permitted on and off site. New Mexico Livestock Board.
EEE in South Carolina
By June 18 there were two new cases of EEE confirmed in South Carolina the week of 6/10/16, bringing the total for 2016 to three total cases. Both new cases, like the initial 2016 case, were unvaccinated horses and were either euthanized or died prior to confirmation of EEE. There were no quarantines issued as these individual cases are closed.
Equine Influenza in West Virginia
The West Virginia Department of Agriculture reported one confirmed case of equine influenza in Jackson County on June 15. Horse events in the county have been cancelled and the Department of Agriculture has suggested that horse owners in Jackson County avoid moving their horses for the time being. This is not considered to be an emergency situation; EIV is highly contagious, but not fatal, and it will usually resolve in two to three weeks. The Equine Disease Communication Center works to protect horses and the horse industry from the threat of infectious diseases in North America. The communication system is designed to seek and report real time information about disease outbreaks similar to how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) alerts the human population about diseases in people.
The goal of the EDCC is to alert the horse industry about disease outbreak information to help mitigate and prevent the spread of disease. Ultimately frequent and accurate information about diseases outbreaks improves horse welfare and helps to prevent negative economic impact that can result from decreased horse use due to a fear of spreading infection. As part of the National Equine Health Plan the EDCC will serve as part of the communication to help educate and promote research about endemic and foreign disease.
Working in cooperation with state animal health officials and the United State Department of Agriculture, the EDCC seeks information about current disease outbreaks from news media, social media, official state reports and veterinary practitioners. Once information is confirmed, it is immediately posted on this website and messages sent to all states and horse organizations by email. Daily updates are posted until each outbreak is contained or deemed no longer a threat.
