StableLab, developers of a breakthrough equine blood test that definitively responds to infectious disease, announces that California Chrome’s veterinary team used StableLab testing to assess systemic disease in the horse during the Triple Crown series.
StableLab is the clearest and earliest indicator of equine infections and is used at the horse’s side to take blood and generate results within minutes. “California Chrome had a tiny ulcer on his soft palate,” said lead veterinarian Kevin Dunlavy, DVM. “Before the Preakness and after the Kentucky Derby, we utilized the StableLab blood test to assess his health. The test showed that he had no other systemic diseases, and we were assured that everything was normal for the champ.”
StableLab works by detecting and measuring Serum Amyloid A (SAA), a major acute phase protein. What makes this biomarker particularly useful in horses is that it responds quickly and aggressively to infections, but not to non-infectious conditions–a discovery made and patented by StableLab.
