End of February Respiratory Disease Update from EDCC

Equine influenza was reported in Iowa and respiratory equine herpesvirus quarantines were released in New York and Nebraska.

An attending veterinarian reported that equine influenza was confirmed in one horse in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, on February 28. The 6-year-old Appaloosa gelding had onset of clinical signs on February 25 that included coughing, fever, and nasal and ocular discharge. The unvaccinated gelding was alive at the time of reporting. On that premises, five other horses were suspected with equine influenza and 20 others were exposed.

It was noted that at testing the confirmed gelding also tested positive for equine herpesvirus type 4.

Saratoga County, New York

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets reported that Barn 29 at Saratoga Harness track was released from respiratory herpesvirus quarantine. The index case and four other horses that were showing clinical signs of respiratory equine herpesvirus have all recovered. No neurologic signs were reported.

Washington County, Nebraska

The attending veterinarian has reported that as of February 27, the voluntary quarantine has been lifted on a premises in Washington County, Nebraska, where one horse was confirmed with respiratory equine herpesvirus and 30 other horses were exposed.

No other horses became ill and the affected horse has recovered.
