Strangles-Positive Mare Confirmed in Massachusetts

One suspect case and one confirmed case of equine strangles in horses shipped from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts.

An attending veterinarian reported a confirmed cast of strangles on a premises in Worcester County, Massachusetts. One other horse was suspected of having the disease. The premises is under quarantine.

A 9-year-old Quarter Horse mare and a companion horse shipped from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on February 7 with an overnight in Connecticut. Both horses has nasal discharge. The confirmed mare tested positive for Stretococcus equi equi on nasal bacterial culture. The other horse had a fever and significant nasal discharge and was only positive for Stretococcus zooepidemicus when tested.
