The Rhode Island State Veterinarian confirmed a case of equine influenza in a weanling Shire colt in Washington County. The colt also tested positive for equine herpesvirus type 4 (EHV-4).

The colt was imported into Rhode Island from New England on October 24. He is kept as a small, privately-owned stable with three other horses. The other horses are not reported to have clinical signs of respiratory disease. All of the horses are owned by the same person and this is a closed herd. No quarantine was issued.

Information for this report was provided by the Equine Disease Communication Center.
