The Office of the Wyoming State Veterinarian confirmed a case of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) at a private facility in Campbell County, Wyoming.
On January 30, 2018, a 6-year-old Quarter Horse gelding of unknown vaccination status at a private facility had rapid progression of hind leg ataxia, weakness, recumbency and normal cranial nerve response. The horse was subsequently euthanized. Eleven other exposed horses have been isolated.
The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) works to protect horses and the horse industry from the threat of infectious diseases in North America. The communication system is designed to seek and report real time information about disease outbreaks similar to how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) alerts the human population about diseases in people.
