Wisconsin reported its 11th confirmed case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) for this year. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection said the case was in a 14-year-old unvaccinated Quarter Horse gelding from Trempealeau County. The gelding was euthanized after becoming febrile, with difficulty standing, and eventually went down on September 1.
WNV in Utah
On September 8, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food confirmed West Nile virus (WNV) in a previously vaccinated 11-month-old filly in Utah County. The filly developed severe neurologic clinical signs and was euthanized. On September 5, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food confirmed WNV in a 2-year-old Thoroughbred filly in Beaver County with an unknown vaccination history. The filly presented with facial tremors and ataxia. She was treated and is improving.
