The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship reported that a 13-year-old Thoroughbred gelding was confirmed positive for equine infectious anemia (EIA) on April 23 at a boarding facility in Polk County, Iowa.
The facility was quarantined upon notification of the positive test result. The gelding was moved to a USDA facility. All remaining horses will remain on site until 60 days after the last known exposure, then tested again. Once all remaining horses have tested negative after a 60 day period the quarantine will be released.
At that same facility, two horses were confirmed with piroplasmosis. The 11-year-old Quarter Horse gelding and the 15-year-old Quarter horse gelding were both euthanized after testing positive. All remaining horses will remain on site and retested 30-days following the confirmation of the two positive horses. Once all remaining horses have tested negative after a 30-day period ,the piroplasmosis quarantine will be released.
