Equine Strangles in Oakland County, Michigan

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed a case of equine strangles in Oakland County. The 9-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse mare had onset of clinical signs on April 11 that included decreased appetite, fever, lethargy and nasal discharge. The unvaccinated mare is recovering.

There is a voluntary quarantine at the facility.

Two other horses on the property were displaying similar clinical signs around the same time as the positive mare, but both horses tested negative for equine strangles.
