The following was sent out by Dr. Craig Carter upon the changing of the guard at the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
“All:
“FYI, today is my last day as Director of the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL). I will be staying on 50% effort for some unfinished business and to help with the transition.
“It gives me great pleasure to introduce Dr. Alan Loynachan, who will now serve as the Interim Director of the UKVDL (alan.loynachan@uky.edu). He received his DVM and PhD in Microbiology from Iowa State University and is Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. He was appointed as the UKVDL Associate Director in 2021. He has extensive veterinary diagnostic laboratory experience and brings outstanding leadership skills to the position. Please help me welcome him aboard into his new role at the UKVDL!

The following is information from the University of Kentucky on Loynachan.
“I’m Al Loynachan a veterinary pathologist at the UKVDL. I attended Iowa State University where I received degrees in microbiology (BS), veterinary medicine (DVM), and veterinary microbiology (PhD). Following my PhD, I did a residency in anatomic veterinary pathology at the University of Kentucky, and I became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2008. Over the last decade, I have held faculty positions at Iowa State University (2007-2008) and the University of Kentucky (2009-current).”
Prior to accepting the directorship of UKVDL, his primary job responsibility was to provide timely and accurate diagnostic pathology services for necropsy, biopsy and cytology cases submitted to the UKVDL. Additionally, he collaborated on various equine infectious disease research projects, assisted with the training of graduate students, sat on various national and university committees, and was a co-editor for the Equine Disease Quarterly.
In his free time, Loynchan likes to travel, read, play video games and explore local eateries and breweries. He lives in Lexington, Kentucky, with his wife, Abbie, two Boston terriers (Oberon and Juno), and a friendly feline (Captain).
