An attending veterinarian reported two confirmed cases of strangles in Montgomery County, Maryland. Four other horses on the property were exposed and the facility is under a voluntary quarantine.
The first horse affected was a 29-year-old Quarter Horse gelding that had onset of clinical signs on January 14. Those signs included bilateral nasal discharge, fever and coughing. He was confirmed with strangles on January 22.
A 12-year-old pony mare had onset of clinical signs on January 16. Those signs included bilateral nasal discharge and fever. She was confirmed with strangles on January 22.
Both horses are alive and affected, and both horses had an unknown vaccination status.
