Three New Michigan Equine Strangles Cases

Strangles was confirmed in unrelated horses in Clinton, St. Clair and Washtenaw Counties in Michigan.

On Friday, June 29, 2018, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed three new cases of strangles. 

Case one was a 10-year-old Quarter Horse gelding from Clinton County. 

Case two was an 8-year-old Quarter Horse mare from St. Clair County. 

Case three was a Standardbred gelding from Washtenaw County. 

All of the horses developed nasal discharge and swollen glands in the neck. All of the horses are alive and under the care of veterinarians. None of the horses was vaccinated against strangles. 

No quarantines were issued, and these cases are not believed to be related to each other. 

This brings the 2018 total number of cases of strangles in Michigan to eight.
