One of the most popular and informative gatherings at the annual AAEP Convention each year is the Infectious Disease Committee meeting. With the Convention being presented virtually this year, we wanted to chat with Dr. Katie Flynn, chairman of the AAEP Infectious Disease Committee, and Committee member Dr. Barbara Jones.
Flynn, BVMS, MRCVS, is the Deputy State Veterinarian at the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. She previously worked as a veterinarian at the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Animal Health Branch (AHB). Flynn received her veterinary degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 2002. Her areas of interest include biosecurity, specifically equine event biosecurity. Flynn has developed biosecurity educational materials for event organizers, specifically the Biosecurity Toolkit for Equine Events that has been distributed to all 50 states and 12 countries. As an equine event biosecurity expert, Flynn participated in the World Animal Health Organization (OIE) Ad Hoc Expert Meeting on Biosecurity in Paris, France, in July 2015, and she spoke at the Federation Equestrian International’s (FEI) National Veterinary Delegate Conference in Athens, Greece, in May of 2016. Flynn is a member of the American Horse Council, the American Quarter Horse Association and the United States Equestrian Federation. Flynn is the current Chair of the Committee of Equine for the United States Animal Health Association.

Jones, DVM, DACVPM, has a Masters of Public Health and is a principle of One Health Consulting and Owner of Equilibrium Veterinary Services. Jones also serves as a Public Health Officer in the Air National Guard and on one of three Air National Guard Homeland Response Force (HRF) Health Risk Assessment Teams. She currently serves the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine’s Executive Board as President-Elect and also serves on the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ Infectious Disease and the Scientific Review and Editorial Committees. She co-edited the textbook Veterinary Infection Prevention and Control.
