The American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians and Assistants (AAEVT) has released Guidelines for the Utilization of the Equine Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CrVT). They are being offered as an educational resource for better understanding of the paraprofessional members of the veterinary team.

This work was based on the AAHA Utilization Guidelines resource released in 2022, which was small-animal-based. Deb Reeder, LVT, VTS-EVN(R), AAEVT Emeritus, approached the AAEVT Executive Team and asked to spearhead a Task Force to create a similar document that was equine only in focus. The Task Force was made up of Reeder and five CrVT technicians (Travis Otremba, Jlynn Meyer, Andrea Whittle, Karen Chapman, and Sue Novik) and AAEVT executive director Wiss Costanza. They presented a draft of the guidelines at the 2023 AAEVT/AAEP Annual Conference in San Diego and received collaboration and input from the AAEP.

Here are the Guidelines for the Utilization of the Equine Credentialed Veterinary Technician documents as of March 2024. Reeder is continuing to work with the AAEP and will be presenting the process and final Guidelines at the AVMA Annual Convention in June 2024.

How To Use These Guidelines & Tools

These resources serve as valuable working guides and tools to enhance a practice’s utilization of equine CrVTs and include:

  • Overview of the Guidelines, including Terminology, Levels of Supervision, and Telehealth/Telemedicine/Technician Appointments.
  • AAEVT’s equine-focused guidelines for the utilization of the CrVT document, a collaborative effort with the AAEP.
  • A customizable tool, according to your practice’s specific needs, preferences, and individual state laws.
