The Equine Network Foundation and A Home For Every Horse presented Alexandra Burnet, DVM, with the 2025 Healing Hands Award, sponsored by Purina. The $2,500 award honors extraordinary veterinarians who go above and beyond, especially for rescue horses. It recognizes the tireless efforts of veterinarians who provide exceptional care in rescue and rehabilitation settings, offering health, hope, and a second chance to horses in need.
Brunet is a veterinarian at Vermont Large Animal Clinic who’s committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care to horses across northern Vermont and New York. A Cornell graduate, she has special interests in geriatric and internal medicine, as well as ophthalmology, and focuses on helping horses live comfortable, healthy lives at every stage. Brunet believes every horse—whether a top athlete, retired companion, or rescue—deserves individualized care. She owns a 23-year-old Quarter Horse mare who’s living her best life as a happy pasture pet.
Brunet also works closely with MerryMac Farm Sanctuary, founded by Era MacDonald, where she supports the welfare of around 20-25 horses and donkeys, as well as pigs, goats, and other farm animals.
“I get the biggest satisfaction helping that group of horses, who have just gone through so much,” she said. “They deserve to be happy and healthy like any other horse. I just feel very fortunate to be part of the team that makes such a huge impact on these lives that really need it.”
She encouraged other horse owners and professionals to see how they can play a part in helping horses live better lives, whether it’s a donation to a sanctuary like MerryMac or opening their own homes to an animal in need.
