Dr. Kathleen Heaney Appointed Leader of Companion Animal and Equine Technical Services for Merck Animal Health

Kathleen Heaney, DVM, has been named Executive Director of Technical Services for Merck Animal Health’s recently formed U.S. Companion Animal and Equine Team. In her new role, Dr. Heaney will oversee the team’s technical services and pharmacovigilance groups. She initially joined the company in 2010 and most recently served as Director of Companion Animal Technical Services.

“I’m honored to lead this team of talented veterinarians who focus on helping ensure the health and well-being of animals every day,” said Dr. Heaney. “Some days that means we educate and on others we are consultants and a resource. No matter what we are doing on any given day, one thing is constant–and that’s our commitment to advancing science for healthier animals, for the well-being of pets, and the pet parents and veterinarians who care for them.”

With more than 20 years of experience in antiparasitic, anesthetic and bone biology research and development, Dr. Heaney has contributed to the launch of several notable animal health products including SCALIBOR (deltamethrin), ACTIVYL (indoxacarb) and Bravecto (fluralaner). She first worked in general veterinary practice for seven years before joining American Cyanamid Company and later Fort Dodge Animal Health, which was the beginning of her career in animal health pharmaceutical research and development.

A board member for the New Jersey Veterinary Foundation, Dr. Heaney also is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Heartworm Society and American Association of Veterinary Pathologists. She has authored or co-authored more than 25 peer-reviewed articles and holds several antiparasitic patents. Dr. Heaney earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University.
