An attending veterinarian reported two confirmed cases of equine strangles on Prince Edward Island in Canada.

In early May, one horse at Red Shores racetrack had clinical evidence of equine strangles and was removed from the property. A second horse from a different stable was confirmed positive by culture and was isolated in quarantine away from the barns.

The one horse that was culture positive remains in a separate quarantine area along with two close contacts.

Testing is expected to be completed on Monday, June 14. No other horses appear to be affected.

Information for this report was provided by the Equine Disease Communication Center.
