In this episode of Disease Du Jour, we discuss tick-borne diseases in horses with Thomas J. Divers, DVM, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Divers, who was honored as an AAEP Distinguished Educator, is the Rudolph J. and Katharine L. Steffen Professor of Veterinary Medicine, Section of Large Animal Medicine at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Divers focused most of his discussion on the cause, diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease in horses. He also covered anaplasmosis and other tick-borne diseases of horses and other animals that might become a problem in horses.

He stated that ticks are spreading across the United States, and they are carrying diseases.

Divers said that veterinarians and researchers need ways to:

  • better identify clinical signs of various tick-borne diseases
  • more easily and quickly confirm each disease
  • vaccinate to protect against tick-borne diseases in horses
  • treat horses with tick-borne diseases
  • control ticks on horses
