The Foundation for the Horse is the charitable arm of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), stated Foundation chair Rick Mitchell, DVM, MRCVS, DACVSMR, Certified ISELP member. “Last year in 2019, we celebrated our 25th anniversary,” said Mitchell.

In the 25th anniversary year, the AAEP Foundation changed its name to the current one to better resonate with the equine community.

“The Foundation for the Horse focuses support in three areas, including education for equine veterinarians, students and grad students; we support research projects and seminars; and we provide benevolence,” said Mitchell. Three areas of benevolence that are focused on by the Foundation are working equids, support of at-risk horses and horses in transition, and disaster relief.

Mitchell is part owner of Fairfield Equine Associates in Connecticut, and through that practice he also services horses in Wellington, Florida. He practices equine medicine and surgery with an emphasis on lameness and imaging.

Dr. Mitchell graduated from the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1974. He served on active duty in the USAF Veterinary Corps for two years following graduation. He then began private practice in Connecticut. Dr. Mitchell has been internationally certified in veterinary acupuncture and equine locomotor pathology as well as completing requirements for diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has been involved in national and international equine competitions as both a rider and veterinarian. Dr. Mitchell served at six Olympic Games as an attending veterinarian for the US Equestrian Team. He was a founding member of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology.
