Equine Strangles at Maryland Boarding Barn

An attending veterinarian reported one confirmed case of strangles, 3 suspected cases and 12 exposed horses at a boarding facility in Carroll County, Maryland, in late December.

The confirmed case was in a 19-year-old Quarter Horse gelding. He had onset of clinical signs on December 20 that included cough, fever and nasal discharge. The gelding was confirmed with strangles on December 28 and is recovering.

The facility is under a voluntary quarantine.
