Strangles in Fayette County, Tennessee

A group of young Tennessee Walking Horses have or were exposed to strangles on a premises in Tennessee.

A private veterinarian reported to the Equine Disease Communication Center that a weanling Tennessee Walking Horse colt had onset of clinical signs for strangles on August 8 and was confirmed on August 10. Clinical signs included coughing, nasal discharge, swollen submandibular lymph nodes and lung abscess. Another young horse was also tested positive, with a dozen exposed.

A voluntary quarantine is in place. The affected horses were not vaccinated.
