West Nile Virus in Iowa and California

Horses in Mitchell County, Iowa, and Kern and Stanislaus Counties in California have been confirmed with WNV.

The Equine Disease Communication Center reported cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in Mitchell County, Iowa, and Kern and Stanislaus Counties, California, in early August.

Iowa WNV

A 3-year-old Standardbred mare in Mitchell County, Iowa, had onset of clinical signs on August 2 and was confirmed with WNV on August 3 by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. The mare is now deceased.

California WNV

The California Department of Food and Agriculture reported that a 9-year-old Rocky Mountain mare in Kern County had onset of WNV clinical signs on August 7. Her clinical signs included ataxia, heat tremor, hind end weakness, muscle fasiculations, and recumbency. The mare was euthanized. She was unvaccinated.

A 2-year-old Paint mare in Stanislaus County had onset of clinical signs of WNV on July 31. Her clinical signs included falling, hypermetria, incoordination, weakness, muzzle and ear twitching, and recumbency. The mare was euthanized. She was unvaccinated.
