In January of this year, there were confirmed cases of equine strangles in Snohomish County, Washington. The Washington Department of Agriculture has confirmed that on May 15, two horses on a property in that county were positive for strangles. Eight other horses were exposed on the property.
A 4-year-old Arab gelding and a 4-year-old Arab mare on that property began showing clinical signs of strangles on May 11. Those signs included fever, nasal discharge and swollen lymph nodes. Both horses were confirmed positive on May 15, both were recovering as of this report, and neither was vaccinated for strangles.
