Equine Influenza and Strangles in Washington State

The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has reported positive cases of equine influenza and strangles.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has reported positive cases of equine influenza and strangles. The Equine Disease Communication Center reported the information on January 24.

Equine Influenza

The WSDA reported one case of equine influenza in Snohomish County, Washington, in a 20-year-old warmblood gelding. The horse is now deceased. Onset of clinical signs was reported on January 3. The horse had a history of appropriate vaccination.

Strangles

The WSDA has confirmed a total of six cases of equine strangles in Thurston, Spokane, Snohomish and Franklin Counties in Washington state.

In Thurston County, two horses were affected, both of which showed upper respiratory signs and were confirmed positive on January 18. No quarantines were put in place. 

In Spokane County, a 5-year-old mule gelding was confirmed positive for strangles. Onset of clinical signs was December 20, 2018.

In Snohomish County, one horse was confirmed positive for strangles on January 3.

In Franklin County, two horses were confirmed positive for strangles. Both horses had swollen lymph nodes and were confirmed positive on January 16.
