EHM Confirmed in Arizona Horse

The Arizona Department of Agriculture has confirmed a case of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in a Quarter Horse in Maricopa County.

The Arizona Department of Agriculture has confirmed a case of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in a Quarter Horse in Maricopa County. Clinical signs included fever, ataxia and neurological symptoms. The affected horse were confirmed positive for EHV-1. 

The premises is under quarantine and strict biosecurity is being followed. The epidemiological investigation is ongoing. 

The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) works to protect horses and the horse industry from the threat of infectious diseases in North America. The communication system is designed to seek and report real time information about disease outbreaks similar to how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) alerts the human population about diseases in people.
