Another EEE Horse Reported in Michigan

An unvaccinated 12-year-old Quarter Horse mare from Clare County, Michigan, tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE).

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development received confirmation of an unvaccinated 12-year-old Quarter Horse mare from Clare County that tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). The horse developed a sudden onset of fever, unwillingness to move, stumbling if moving, and lethargy. The horse is being treated. No quarantines were issued.

This bring the number of reported cases of EEE in Michigan for 2017 to four, two from Clare County, one from Roscommon County and one from Wexford County.

The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) works to protect horses and the horse industry from the threat of infectious diseases in North America. The communication system is designed to seek and report real time information about disease outbreaks similar to how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) alerts the human population about diseases in people.
