Donald G. Marean has been elected to the American Horse Council (AHC) Board of Trustees. Marean served four years in the Maine House of Representatives (2005-2008), and was re-elected to the House in 2012 and again in 2014, where he is currently serving.
“I am really looking forward to opportunity to serve as a Trustee of The American Horse Council,” said Marean. “Currently I am serving my fourth term in the Maine House of Representatives and I sit on the Joint Standing Committee of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. I have been on this committee all four terms and I am hoping I can bring some legislative experience to AHC. Maine has about 35,000 horses and contributes approximately $320 million annually to Maine’s economy.”
“The AHC is pleased to have someone like Don serve as a Trustee,” said AHC President Jay Hickey. “He not only has experience in the horse industry, but also in the legislative arena. You don’t get that combination very often.”
Marean is chairman of the U.S. Trotting Association’s District 9. He owned and operated Standish Hardware & Feed Co. for 30 years and sold the business to his employees in 2008. In 1988 founded Lindon Farm, with his wife, Linda, and ran it until 2009 as a Standardbred breeding facility. In 2010 they retired from breeding, but they continue to own and race horses.
Marean is a director of the Main Farm Bureau Horse Council and currently is vice-chair of the University of Maine (Orono) Board of Agriculture. He is also a director of the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association, and past-president and director of the Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association. He was appointed by the Governor as Chair of the Land for Maine’s Future Board, as well as to serve on the Animal Welfare Advisory Council, representing Maine Farm Bureau and large animals,
In 2003, Don received the Distinguished Service Award from the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association, and in 2013, he received the Appreciation Award from Harness Horsemen’s International.
Don and his wife have been married for 55 years and have three daughters, Shirley, Dawn and Christine; two granddaughters, Whitney and Blake; a grandson, Briar; and three great-grandsons, Tyler, Jayden and Brodie.
