Equine Photosensitization Cases Reported in Southern California

Several cases of equine photosensitization possibly related to alfalfa hay have been reported in Southern California, according to www.pe.com (Press Enterprise ).

The article stated that two dozen cases have been reported to the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Animal Health and Food Safety Services Division.

UC Davis toxicologists are investigating to try and determine the cause of the problem with specific alfalfa hay from several hay distributors.

Veterinarians are encouraged to report any photosensitization cases in that region.
