Tips for Solving Tech Problems on the Cheap

  • Google is your friend: Type the problem or the error into the search engine. You’ll be directed to forums and message boards with solutions.
Okay, go ahead. Ask your brother’s nerdy son or the neighbor to help solve the problem.
  • Go to the local vocational school and ask technology department officials if they have a student who might like to help.
Use one of the big-box stores—Best Buy’s Geek Squad, for example—for simpler problems. Remember that these services can be hit or miss.
  • Hire a local consultant. And if you have a lot of technology issues, you might want to consider a monthly or annual contract at a reduced rate. Get references from other small businesses.
