Neurologic Equine Herpesvirus in Seneca County, Ohio

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has confirmed a case of neurologic equine herpesvirus (neurologic EHV-1 also known as equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy or EHM) at a boarding facility in Seneca County.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has confirmed a case of neurologic equine herpesvirus (neurologic EHV-1, also known as equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy or EHM) at a boarding facility in Seneca County. There are 15 horses exposed.

The affected horse was a 13-year-old Quarter Horse mare used for pleasure riding. She had onset of clinical signs on December 10 that included fever, ataxia and urine dribbling. She was confirmed with equine herpesvirus on December 16. The vaccinated mare is recovering.

A quarantine was placed by ODA on the facility. The owner of the facility was informed of EHV-1/EHM protocols to be in place.
