Neurologic Warmblood Gelding in Los Angeles County Positive for EHV-1

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) reported a confirmed case of neurologic equine herpesvirus at a boarding facility in Los Angeles County. 

On March 6, a 12-year-old Warmblood gelding in Los Angeles County had onset of neurologic signs that included ataxia, urine dribbling, forlimb and hind limb ataxia, and partial paraphimosis. The gelding was confirmed positive for equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1, non-neuropathogenic strain) on March 9. The under-vaccinated gelding is affected and alive while being overseen by a veterinarian. 

Following an assessment of the gelding’s home premises in Los Angeles County by CDFA personnel, forty-five (45) potentially exposed horses have been quarantined with enhanced biosecurity measures and twice daily temperature monitoring. 

The owners of all exposed horses have been notified and no additional cases have been identified at this time. CDFA will continue to actively monitor exposed horses.
