Merck Animal Health featured a presentation by Nicola Pusterla, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, AVDC-Equine, of the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, during the 2020 AAEP Virtual Convention. Pusterla’s presentation was titled, “Practical Tips for the Diagnosis and Prevention of EPM.”

Pusterla is a professor of equine internal medicine and dentistry at the UC Davis. His research focus is on equine infectious diseases with an emphasis on molecular epidemiology. Pusterla also leads the UC Davis Equine Infectious Disease Research Laboratory.

Pusterla said EPM is a field that many often feel isn’t moving fast enough, and a field that seems to be always in the gray zone.

The presentation is about 55 minutes long.

“I realize that when the person has to respond to a case there are still some unknown and confusing areas (when it comes to EPM),” said Pusterla.

He said the presentation was designed to help build clinical skills when it comes to diagnosing and treating EPM.

He said an emphasis of his presentation was on clinical diagnostics for EPM. “We also have new information we have gathered this year (2020), and in the last part [of the presentation] we’ll dive into prevention,” Pusterla added.
