Welcome to the first episode of Disease Du Jour for 2021. This year we will again partner with Merck Animal Health to bring you veterinary-level information on equine health. In 2021, we will focus more episodes on ambulatory medicine, bringing you tips and information from experts in their fields.

Karen Wolfsdorf, DVM, DACT, joined Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in 2002, and she works as a field veterinarian and as an equine reproduction specialist at the McGee Fertility Center. She received her veterinary degree and completed her residency in theriogenology at the University of Florida.

EquiManagement’s Disease Du Jour podcast is focused on equine research and current best practices. Disease Du Jour is brought to you in 2020 by Merck Animal Health.

We know that many veterinarians have few—if any—equine reproduction patients in their daily practices. However, we also know that many veterinarians have practices where they tend to any animal presented to them, including pregnant mares. Sometimes veterinarians are called in to assist in equine pregnancy and foaling situations at rescues, where mares face other health issues in addition to being pregnant.

In this podcast, Wolfsdorf covers reproduction basics as a refresher for those with new repro patients or who might be new graduates in equine practice. And those who do work with mares regularly might even get a few tips from this experienced colleague.

Topics covered:

  • checklist for pregnant mares
  • due date?
  • tips for mares being bred
  • when should you call an expert?
