The 33rd Annual Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture will take place February 16, 2019, at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM). This year’s event features farrier Tim Shannon and equine veterinarian Dr. G. Marvin Beeman.
Farriers and equine veterinarians are invited to attend the event, which takes place from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Morning lectures will be in Gladys Valley Hall on the SVM campus, with an afternoon hands-on session to follow.

The Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture is an annual event that has been offered free to farriers and equine veterinarians since 1987. Colloquially known as “The Heumphreus,” it is the first endowed lecture at the SVM and has attracted an impressive list of farrier and veterinary speakers over the past 33 years. The endowment was founded by Dr. Tim O’Brien, UC Davis emeritus faculty radiologist, to honor Heumphreus’ 18 years of service as the UC Davis veterinary hospital farrier.
This year’s program is a joint effort of the Center for Continuing Professional Education and the Heumphreus Organizing Committee, composed of UC Davis resident farrier Shane Westman, APF, and clinicians Drs. Emily Berryhill, Larry Galuppo and Mary Beth Whitcomb (chair).
The 2019 Heumphreus Lecture will explore the core concepts of anatomy, form and function from the perspectives of the farrier and veterinarian. The morning lecture session will include Southern California farrier Shannon presenting “Anatomy Decoded” and Colorado veterinarian Beeman sharing his ever-popular lecture on “The Relationship of Form to Function.”
The afternoon hands-on session will include a demonstration by Shannon—joined by Westman and Whitcomb—that will lead attendees through a distal limb dissection to provide a hands-on opportunity for farriers and veterinarians to explore the anatomy of the equine distal limb using prosections and cadaver specimens. The afternoon session has a limited capacity (50), so early registration is strongly encouraged.
Tim Shannon, CJF, APF, AWCF, is a full-time farrier from Southern California who has practiced since 1987. His practice consists mostly of FEI Eventing and Endurance horses. His clients have competed across the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. Shannon is an AFA approved tester, clinician and speaker, and he has written for the American Farriers Journal. He has competed in farrier competitions across the country and was the “World’s Fastest Mule Shoer” in 2008. He is committed to continual farrier education for all. Shannon is currently working on a Graduate Diploma on Equine Locomotor Research through the Royal Veterinary College of London.
Dr. G. Marvin Beeman, DVM, received his veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 1957 and spent his entire career at Littleton Equine Medical Center with a focus on equine lameness. Beeman has served in countless roles at the state and national level, including as president of both the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association, as well as various leadership roles with the American Horse Council, American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), USDA Equine Advisory Committee, Morris Animal Foundation and Colorado State University. Among his many accolades, he received the Colorado Veterinarian of the Year Award, delivered the AAEP Keynote Address in 2014 and has been inducted into the AQHA, International Stockman’s and American Farriers Halls of Fame. Beeman is an avid horseman, playing polo and serving as Huntsman for the Arapahoe Hunt Club for 33 years.

However, to help sustain the level of excellence for which “The Heumphreus” has been known for more than 30 years, the school asks that participants consider making a contribution of $50 or more.
