2022 Equine Strangles Cases in Michigan and Ohio Horses

Three cases of equine strangles were reported in December 2021. Two cases were in Ohio and one case was in in Michigan.

Michigan Equine Strangles Case

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed a case of equine strangles in a 12-year-old Quarter Horse gelding in Delta County. The gelding had onset of clinical signs on December 4, 2021, that included a swollen throat that progressed to draining abscesses. He was confirmed with equine strangles December 23. The gelding is recovering.

Ohio Equine Strangles Cases

The Ohio State Department of Agriculture confirmed two cases of equine strangles at a private facility in Logan County.
