In spite of the extensive drives, days and dedication often required of them, many equine veterinarians couldn’t imagine doing anything other than taking care of horses in need.

Boehringer Ingelheim is celebrating these champions of equine health on World Veterinary Day with a $10,000 donation to The Foundation for the Horse, the charitable arm of American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), along with the release of an online video in their honor.

“Equine veterinarians are one-of-a-kind caregivers who put the health and welfare of the horse above everything else, including themselves,” says Renee Hall, head of the U.S. equine business of Boehringer Ingelheim. “We wanted to thank them for their passion and devotion both today and every day.”

The donation to The Foundation for the Horse will be used to help support the health and welfare of horses, including relevant research, education and outreach to the equine industry.

“Celebrating and supporting equine veterinarians through this gift will help us address key health concerns and needs facing the equine population and our veterinarians,” says David Foley, executive director of AAEP. “We are most appreciative of Boehringer Ingelheim’s continued support of the veterinarian and most importantly the horse through The Foundation.”

In addition, the video, which has been posted to the Boehringer Ingelheim Equine Health Facebook page and YouTube channel, features the daily challenges in the life of an equine veterinarian.

For example, as the video explains, “Your office doesn’t have walls. It has fences. And mud. And thunderstorms. And 1,200-pound patients that don’t like thunderstorms.”

“It’s a peek into the life of an equine veterinarian that all horse owners and lovers can appreciate,” says Hall. “It also brings to life why it’s so important to appreciate the commitment to care that equine veterinarians provide to their patients — both human and animal — every day.”
