Equine Strangles in Delaware and Minnesota

In Delaware, the state veterinarian has quarantined a Standardbred training facility in Kent County effective December 17. One horse was reported with a positive culture for Streptococcus equi on December 16.

In Minnesota, an attending veterinarian reported a voluntary quarantine in Dakota County due to two cases of equine strangles. About 100 horses were exposed. The veterinarian reported through the Equine Disease Communication Center that cases were on-going and the affected stable will remain quarantined. Eight of the clinical cases were vaccinated with intranasal strangles vaccine within the last year.
