First 2021 Confirmed EEE Horse in Florida

A Quarter Horse mare in Volusia County, Florida, was the first confirmed case of EEE in that state this year.

A Florida state animal health official confirmed a case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in a horse on a private facility in Volusia County.

The 4-year-old Quarter Horse mare had onset of clinical signs on January 11 that included inability to stand, incoordination and weakness of the hind limbs. She was confirmed positive on January 20. The unvaccinated mare was euthanized.

This was the first confirmed case of EEE in Florida for 2021.
