IDEXX Launches New Rapid Pregnancy Test for Cattle

Editor’s note: We are an business publication for equine veterinarians. However, the most recent AAEP member survey shows that 27% of AAEP members who aren’t equine-only practitioners also practice bovine medicine. While we won’t be focusing on the business side of any other species, we will occasionally bring you news or product information on other species if that information seems important to your business.

IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDXX) announced today the launch of the Rapid Visual Pregnancy Test for cattle, a point-of-care test that can detect an open cow 28 days post-breeding, improving reproductive efficiency and profitability. With the new test, veterinarians can more quickly and accurately identify open cows using whole blood samples collected before the farm visit, enabling veterinarians to provide value-added medical consulting services while on farm.

“This new rapid point-of-care test helps veterinarians expand their reproductive management services,” said Oliver te Boekhorst, corporate vice president and general manager, IDEXX. “Bovine veterinarians can use the test on farm as a complement to manual palpation and ultrasound by testing samples collected prior to their farm visit. In addition, veterinarians can use the test in-house to run blood samples sent in by dairy producers when the veterinarian cannot schedule a farm visit at the ideal time for a reproductive check.”

“The Rapid Visual Pregnancy Test frees up valuable time for the veterinarian and is a key part of IDEXX’s commitment to empowering veterinarians to service their customers in the best and most efficient way possible,” said Jonathan W. Ayers, president and chief executive officer of IDEXX Laboratories.

According to a recent article in the Journal of Dairy Science, new technologies that identify non-pregnant dairy cows and heifers early after artificial insemination could play a key role in management strategies to improve reproductive efficiency and profitability on dairy farms. The Rapid Visual Bovine Pregnancy Test detects open cows based on pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs), the industry standard for pregnancy testing. This new test allows bovine veterinarians to perform whole blood-based testing on the farm or in house in 21 minutes without the need for laboratory instruments. Real-time rapid results are achieved from 28 days post-breeding.

IDEXX offers a portfolio of tests to help veterinarians and producers improve reproductive management, including laboratory-based tests for pregnancy detection using milk and serum samples.
