Level 3 Lab to be Built in Murray State University’s New Veterinary Center

Murray State University’s Breathitt Veterinary Center in Hopkinsville has received funding for a new structure, according to information on wkms.org. The article stated that the new veterinary center will have the second Biological Safety Level 3 lab suite in Kentucky. The other is at the University of Louisville.

The article states that the facility will be “equipped to handle a higher level of bio safety and bio security: hermetically sealed off, airflow filtered. When a challenge is faced from disease causing organism, a higher level of biological safety is needed in order to handle specimens. This will not include handling major issues like the Ebola virus, which would be at a Level 4 facility (CDC and a few other locations in the United States).”

Completion date of the new laboratory is in 2016.
