Washington State Neurologic Horse Quarantined

A gelding in Island County, Washington state, is recovering from mild neurologic signs after testing positive for EPM and EHV-1 wild type.

In Island County, Washington, an 18-year-old Quarter Horse gelding had onset of clinical signs on June 7 that included being back sore, having difficulty rising, and bladder atony (muscle weakness). The gelding was tested and results from the Washington State Department of Agriculture on June 11 showed he was positive for EPM and EHV-1 wild type. He is recovering.

Twenty-five horses have been quarantined at the premises.
