She discussed the laws surrounding the virtual Veterinarian Client Patient Relationship (VCPR) and how they differ between states, as well as regulations veterinarians must consider, which are constantly changing. She also mentioned the helpful resources the Veterinary Virtual Care Association has compiled, including an interactive map that outlines each state’s current regulations on veterinary telemedicine.
Lacroix shared some of the most important steps practices should take when utilizing telemedicine, including recordkeeping and communication logs. She reminded veterinarians that it’s important to recognize when an in-person visit is necessary. She said telemedicine has the potential to increase efficiency for rechecks and triage, and she suggested involving licensed technicians in states where it’s legal. In closing, Lacroix predicted that telemedicine is here to stay and will likely expand in the future.

Charlotte Lacroix, DVM, JD, earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California, Davis, in 1988, after which she worked as an equine practitioner until her love of advocacy led her to earn a law degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. Her professional career has been dedicated to helping veterinarians and other members of the industry navigate the quagmire of risks and challenges within the veterinary profession.
Lacroix owns Veterinary Business Advisors Inc., a national consulting firm for veterinary business and legal issues. She has over 20 years of experience assisting veterinarians. She lectures extensively on business and legal issues and facilitates continuing education seminars nationwide. Lacroix volunteers for organizations including the AVMA, AAHA, AAEP, NJVMA, and PVMA. She is currently a board member of the Veterinary Innovation Council and Veterinary Virtual Care Association.
