The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development noted that the two cases were a 10-year-old Belgian mare from Clinton County and a 21-year-old Quarter Horse mare from Wexford County.

The state reported that both horses developed a sudden onset of neurologic disease and became recumbent and unable to rise. Both horses were euthanized due to the severity of the disease. Neither horse had been vaccinated against WNV.

Michigan WNV cases this year have occurred in Clinton, Livingston, Jackson, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee and Wexford Counties.

No quarantines were issued, according to the state.
