Acetaminophen Safe for Use in Horses With Chronic Conditions

Researchers evaluated the safety of acetaminophen and determined it can be administered as a substitute for or in combination with other NSAIDs.

Acetaminophen is commonly used in horses for its analgesic and antipyretic effects and fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). Previous studies demonstrate that administering acetaminophen along with other NSAIDs, in particular COX-2 inhibitors, “potentiates their analgesic and anti-inflammatory action.”

Research on Acetaminophen Safety in Horses

Researchers in Romania recently evaluated the safety of acetaminophen in two middle-aged, healthy Lipizzaner horses. They gave the horses 20 mg/kg of acetaminophen as an oral powder mixed with a glucose solution every 12 hours for two weeks.

The researchers took blood samples on Days 0, 7, and 14. Acetaminophen treatment produced no signs of hepatotoxicity. Blood platelets decreased, possibly due to platelet aggregation, but no other hematological values demonstrated significant changes. Albumin, glucose, total protein, liver enzymes, creatine kinase, and urea remained within normal reference ranges.

Final Thoughts

In summary, the authors recommend acetaminophen for elderly horses with chronic conditions, including laminitis or osteoarthritis. This medication has a high bioavailability without adverse reactions at this dose of 20 mg/kg twice a day. It can be administered as a substitute for or in combination with other NSAIDs. The authors cautioned that due to unavailable data, acetaminophen should not be used in pregnant mares or in competitive sport horses subject to drug testing.
