Two horses in South Carolina have been euthanized after being confirmed positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE).

The South Carolina State Veterinarian’s office noted that it had received laboratory confirmations of the positive EEE cases this week. One was 4-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse mare in Jasper County that was vaccinated last fall. The second positive EEE case was a 3.5-year-old Quarter Horse gelding with unknown vaccination status diagnosed in Charleston County.
