EquiManagement Magazine March-April 2018

This issue contains the 2017 AAEP Convention wrap-up that covers business, health/medical and life balance/wellness topics.

The annual American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Convention is a highlight of continuing education for equine veterinarians each year. In this March-April issue of EquiManagement magazine, we covered business, health/medical and life balance/wellness topics from the annual Convention, plus other topics of interest to equine veterinarians, vet techs/assistants, and vet staffs.

Following is an overview of the content in the March-April 2018 issue of EquiManagement magazine.

On page 4 in Publisher’s Points, the EquiManagement team welcomes our new partners: British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), AVMA PLIT, and the New Zealand Equine Veterinary Association (NZEVA). EquiManagement is now an official Media Partner of those three prestigious organizations. This is in addition to our long-standing partnership with the AAEP and AAEVT.

On page 6 in Keeping Up (our medical/research section), Nancy S. Loving, DVM, summarized information on Equine Rabies (a panel discussion hosted by Zoetis at the AAEP Convention); and the following topics from the 2017 BEVA symposium—After-Hours Emergencies, Decontamination of Strangles Infection, and Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome and ACTH.

In our Business Briefs column on page 14, Amy Grice, VMD, MBA, discussed How to Use a Line of Credit. She noted that most small businesses experience cash flow problems from time to time and that a line of credit can help bridge those shortfalls.

The Business of Practice on page 16 was a wrap-up of some of the business presentations and discussions at the 2017 AAEP Convention. Grice covered the AAEP Business News Hour, Inventory Management, Financial Basics, and Form Successful Partnerships in this article.

Health Coverage from the 2017 AAEP Convention on page 24 included many topics presented at the Convention. Loving authored this article and four others that were posted on EquiManagement.com in February from the health and medical topics presented at the AAEP Convention. All of the health coverage was brought to you by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health.

On page 32, in the article Work-Life Balance and Wellness, Grice brought out key points from the AAEP Convention Keynote Speaker Nigel Marsh, whose Ted Talk on work-life balance (ted.com/talks/nigel_marsh_how_to_make_work_life_balance_work) has the cachet of being the most viewed ever of those given outside the United States.

On page 38, we featured the article New Ideas for Cleaning Your Hospital. The take-home message stated: “Challenge yourself to be more thoughtful about cleaning than you are now. Realize that cleaning properly does make a difference for day-to-day biological risk.

Have you ever worried about your equine practice computers being taken over or data stolen from your system? In the article Hacked!, experts offer suggestions on how you can protect your practice from becoming the victim of a cyberattack.
