Important Things to Tell Your Clients About DJD

Early recognition, diagnosis, and management of degenerative joint disease is key for horses' long-term soundness.

Horse owner knowledge about degenerative joint disease (DJD) varies. According to Sherry Johnson, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVSMR, senior partner at Equine Sports Medicine in Pilot Point, Texas/Scottsdale, Arizona, there are three things veterinarians can never overemphasize about DJD to their clients:

  1. What the early signs look like.
  2. DJD can develop at any age.
  3. There is no such thing as being too proactive when it comes to diagnosing DJD.

“The key to treating DJD is catching it early,” said Johnson. “When caught early and treated appropriately with a PSGAG like Adequan i.m.®, horses may experience significantly better outcomes.”

In this video brought to you by American Regent Animal Health, Johnson goes into more detail about why early recognition, diagnosis, and management of degenerative joint disease is so important for horses’ long-term soundness.
