The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service has quarantined three premises in Marion, Sumter and Lake Counties due to equine strangles.
On April 1, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services placed three premises under quarantine after one horse at the primary premises displayed clinical signs and tested positive for strangles via culture. The index horse is a 20-plus-year-old Appaloosa gelding. Initial clinical signs include fever and nasal discharge.
The two other premises contain horses displaying clinical signs as a result of exposure to the index horse and/or property.
Ten out of 52 horses on the three premises are currently displaying clinical signs of strangles.
