The Nevada State Veterinarian confirmed on April 19 that a 10-year-old gelding had been confirmed with equine herpesvirus in Clark County. There were no reports of the clinical signs, but the horse was vaccinated and is recovering.
The reported noted that testing on a sample collected on April 17 and confirmed on April 19 was positive for the non-neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1. The gelding had been present at a national reining event in Clark County, Nevada.
This is the second Nevada horse to test positive after being at the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Stallion Stakes.
The gelding was vaccinated and is not showing neurologic signs. He is recovering with treatment.
The entire Clark County facility where the gelding resides has been placed under quarantine by the Nevada Department of Agriculture, and there are an estimated 80 horses at this premises. More updates will follow related to this outbreak.
In Nevada this year, six cases of equine herpesvirus have been confirmed, including two neurologic cases.
