Neurologic Lead Pony Euthanized at Los Alamitos Race Course California

A lead pony at Los Alamitos Race Course in California was euthanized due to neurologic herpesvirus.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) confirmed equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (wild-type strain) in a 10-year-old horse ( lead pony) displaying neurologic signs at Los Alamitos Race Course. The horse was euthanized. 

A quarantine has been issued for exposed horses. 

All exposed horses will be monitored for clinical signs and temperatures will be taken twice daily. 

CDFA and California Horse Racing Board staff are onsite, ensuring that biosecurity measures are implemented. The staff will continue to monitor the situation.

The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) works to protect horses and the horse industry from the threat of infectious diseases in North America. The communication system is designed to seek and report real time information about disease outbreaks similar to how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) alerts the human population about diseases in people.
